Supporting Carers in Newcastle 2018

A carer is someone of any age who provides unpaid care and support to a family member, partner, friend or neighbour who couldn’t manage without their help. This could be because of disability, illness, frailty, mental ill health or alcohol or drug problems. The care provided may be personal, emotional, physical or supervisory (keeping an eye on someone to make sure they are okay). It does not include any caring or support activities done as part of someone’s paid or voluntary work, but it does include people who receive Carer’s Allowance.

Many people do not see themselves as carers but if the description given applies to you then you probably are one. Newcastle City Council are working together with NHS Newcastle Gateshead Clinical Commissioning Group to review the provision of services and support for carers across the whole of the city. This survey is one of the ways we are working with carers and services supporting them to find out more about this and we greatly appreciate you taking the time to give us your views.

Firstly, we need to know a bit about you and if you are completing the survey for yourself, another carer or if you are representing the views of an organisation. We also need to know where you live, to help us find out if carers have differing needs in different areas of the city.

The survey is broken down under these headings:

  • Identifying carers
  • Accessing information and advice for carers
  • Identifying your needs
  • Support for carers
  • Having a life outside of or beyond caring
  • Recognising carers as 'expert care partners'
  • Involving carers in designing, delivering and monitoring services
  • How the community can support carers
  • Anything else you wish to say

Your answers will be treated in strict confidence, and any help or support services you or the person you look after may get will not be affected by what you say here. You will not be personally identified in the results which will only be used to help improve the provision of services to carers in Newcastle. No-one involved in providing services to you or the person you care for will see your answers.

This survey is one of the ways we are working with carers and services supporting them to find out more about this and we greatly appreciate you taking the time to give us your views by completing this online survey. If you have any questions about the survey, or you need it in another format, such as in another language or large print, please contact Fiona Richardson, Carers Lead Officer on: 0191 277 7452 or email her at fiona.s.richardson@newcastle.gov.uk.
