Cycle Route 7 Proposed improvements to Durant Road / Ellison Street 2015 - This consultation has now ended

The council has been awarded more than £16 million from the Department for Transport's Cycle City Ambition Fund (CCAF) to develop routes and encourage more people to cycle.  This will not only benefit cyclists but will also bring road safety improvements and benefits to health and the local environment and economy. Supporting a city-wide network fit for the future, the funding has come direct from Government and can only be spent on this and other schemes for cycling, pedestrian and associated improvements.
Durant Road and Ellison Place Improvements
Durant Road and Ellison Place will be the first section of Cycle Route 7, linking John Dobson Street to Falconar Street and the east of the city via the Northumbria University Footbridge over the Central Motorway
The proposed package of benefits and improvements to Durant Road and Ellison Place include:
  • footbridge and associated ramps to be removed adjacent to Saville Medical Centre and replaced with new road crossings providing improved space for pedestrians
  • segregated two-way cycle track making it safer and easier for cyclists
  • new, more efficient traffic light junctions, keeping traffic moving
  • cycle parking
  • new road and footpath surfaces
Linked to this scheme is a proposal to the change priorities at the College Street / Northumberland Road junction (Cycle Route 6), which will make crossing College Street safer and easier for pedestrians and cyclists.

You can also see how the cycle routes will link to wider schemes in the city here.
