We want to hear your views on our proposals for the future to transform the Northumberland Street area into a world-class shopping and leisure destination. Find out more here:
We are working with NE1, the city’s Business District Improvement partner, to put forward an ambitious vision for this area, and last year we approved a £3 million package for improvements to this area. The proposals cover the Northumberland Street and Blackett Street areas of the city's retail core, and includes the streets directly off Northumberland Street. By doing this we aim to:
- Make Newcastle one of the most profitable retail cores in the country
- Improve all the visual elements that add to the street’s character, including pavements, street furniture, open and green spaces
- Create an evening and cultural economy
- Ensure the city centre is accessible for everyone
- Improve air quality
- Make our city a worthy regional capital and international visitor destination.
In the next couple of months we will begin a deep clean of the area in preparation for the Great Exhibition of the North, then over the next 18 months there will be an ongoing programme of work.
We will continue to speak to businesses, organisations, groups and individuals to help shape our plans. We will be holding a number of events for the public where you can find out more details about our plans, speak to officers involved and have an opportunity to let us have your views. We will also be working closely with businesses via NE1, who will be holding a wide range of business forums relating to the project.
