The Housing Act 2004 provided councils with the power to introduce licensing of privately rented properties in selected areas. There are currently two areas in Newcastle which are designated selective licencing areas: Byker Old Town and Allendale South
Newcastle City Council will launch a consultation on 5 November 2018 on a proposal to introduce a new licensing scheme which will cover up to 18,000 rented properties in the city.
