As a City Deal city we have been invited to bid for a Cycle City Ambition grant to support the first two years of a transformational long-term cycling programme.
We are able to bid for up to £5.6M capital funding for a scheme which will
• Support the local economy and facilitate economic development
• Show a level of ambition, cross party support and commitment to a long term vision for transformational change
• Show a level of engagement with Director of Public Health and Health and Well Being Boards
• Reduce carbon emissions, traffic noise and improve air quality through enabling big shifts in the amount of cycling.
• Impact on improving the health of the local population and reducing health inequalities, in particular by targeting the most physically inactive groups
• Improve the public realm and do no harm to the pedestrian environment
Schemes need to support both walking and cycling -proposals that actively add value to the pedestrian environment will be looked on favourably.

Our Strategic Cycle Route Network proposals will form the backbone of our bid but that won’t be enough. We will need your ideas and support to secure the funding and to use it as a springboard for a long term change in the way we travel across Newcastle. We need to involve everyone, particularly people who don’t yet cycle.
