Christon Road / Hyde Terrace No Entry Enforcement 2025

Please give us your views about this proposal to enforce the No Entry requirement at the Christon Road / Hyde Terrace junction in Gosforth via a static camera.
Background
Newcastle City Council is now the designated enforcement authority for moving traffic contraventions, under Part 6 of the Traffic Management Act 2004. This means that powers of enforcement that were previously owned by the Police for enforcing restrictions, such as yellow box junction and banned turns, now sit with the Local Authority.
What we propose to do
We are consulting on the proposal to enforce the No Entry restriction at Hyde Terrace / Christon Road with a static camera. Over the last ten years, we have received numerous complaints about the use of Hyde Terrace as a through route.
In addition, there have also been concerns raised by our Community Safety team regarding the junction of Hyde Terrace and Christon Road and the traffic using Hyde Terrace. Northumbria Police are also aware of these concerns and stationed an officer there for a period of time to regularly monitored the junction for motorists ignoring the restrictions. The police have also advised businesses in the industrial estate that Hyde Terrace should not be used by through traffic to avoid more congested routes.
This issue is clearly a cause of concern and has led to increasing levels of unnecessary traffic on Hyde Terrace, which is a quiet residential street.
How we are gathering people's views
We have recently procured some additional surveys to identify the number of contraventions of the no entry restriction from Christon Road into Hyde Terrace. The results of these surveys, along with feedback and opinions from local residents, businesses and stakeholders, will determine whether enforcement of the restriction by static camera should be introduced in this location.
