The City Council has identified that additional primary and secondary school places are required in the Newbiggin Hall and Callerton areas due to the continued growth in pupil numbers in the existing population and from the planned major housing developments in the north and west of the city. The suitability of a number of potential sites in the area where the new secondary school is required has been assessed and only the site at Simonside, which includes the former school playing fields, community centre and existing Primary School, is deemed to be suitable for the location of the new secondary school.
Development of the Simonside site would result in the public open space being replaced by new sports pitches which would be available for public use, out of school hours. At this stage, therefore, the Council is seeking views on the principle of developing a new school on the Simonside site.
