‘Localised Provision – Newcastle’ business support programme 2022 - This consultation has now ended

This project ended in 31 May 2022.
A significant amount of stakeholder engagement and consultation took place in 2022, led by the North of Tyne Combined Authority, in partnership with North Tyneside Council, Northumberland Council and Newcastle City Council. The focus of this engagement was on the approach to delivering the UK Shared Prosperity Fund in our area, including providing support to local people starting and running businesses.  Stakeholders included local MPs, public, private and voluntary sector organisations, and support providers.  Engagement took place through a series of workshop events and calls for evidence.

The main issues raised were:
 • There is a strong consensus that there is a need to increase business stock and increase the level of start-up support.
 • Increase R&D and innovation activity - at different levels.
 • Messages in general need to be simplified to the business community, to encourage take-up of support.
 • Consider accessibility vs inclusivity, delivering programmes that are easy to access.
 • If possible, lower the number of interventions, but ensure they deliver higher impacts.
 • Address connectivity issues in the business community. Note that these are not always digital as some businesses struggle to access or maintain basic utility services, as well as transport.
 • Lack of skills is a major challenge across all sectors preventing growth. Look to:
o Increase communication between business community and education
o Speak to children at an earlier stage to encourage interest across various sectors
 • There are needs around business owner skills – additional requirements for financial management and leadership.
